Please, bear with me, as I am limited to 350 words with which to tell my story. It's a familiar one. "Young black male, victim of the streets; product of his environment." But who I am doesn't begin or end there. I'm so much more than that.... a man with hopes and dreams. I aspire to do something great, to be someone great in this life. I need your help to accomplish this. I need your help at another chance at life.
Incarcerated at 22, I am 31 years old serving a 30 year sentence for an alleged drug related kidnapping. You've heard it before, I'm sure, but I'm not guilty of this crime. In fact, the crime alleged was committed with a handgun, however, the jury found me not guilty of "Use of a Handgun in the Commission of a Crime of Violence." I'm the only one still here, my co-defendant's are all home. Though I maintain my innocence of this crime, I do acknowledge and except responsibility for the life I was living out there. However, it's one thing to be doing time for a crime you did commit, It's another to have to suffer years of incarceration for a crime you simply had nothing to do with.
In the last 9 years I've learned that I was denied my constitutional rights to a fair trial and that my trial attorney failed to do so many things that would have exonerated me. In that same period of time several of my family members have passed away. My mother is all I have out there, it's been very difficult for her.
I only have a year left to get back in court. I need help to retain this attorney and thus attain my freedom. All I have left is hope.... and a real chance if you will help me. I assure you that whatever money you contribute to me is not simply a charitable donation, but an investment in my future. I just want a chance to live.
