Jail Mail Prison Pen Pals

Dear Stranger,

I was compelled to compose this letter because I am suffering from loneliness in the 1st degree. I am a 41 year old black man who once lived on the dark side of life. Consequently, I'm paying retribution for my sins. I am now in my 11th year of incarceration. I utilize my time by reinventing myself. I believe, I can be a better person than what I've displayed in my not-so-great past.

My motive is to establish a meaningful line of communication with you. A friendship cultivated from the seeds of honesty and "keeping it real". Yes, we may start off as strangers, but who's to say we can't develop a friendship?

I understand the news media paints a sometime grim picture of those confined in prison. I am a convicted Drug Dealer. I did not rape, assault or murder anyone. I am an imperfect human being who has made more bad choices in life than I care to remember. So please judge me by my current deeds and actions, when this letter unfolds in your hands.

I will try and describe myself without sounding vain. I'm compassionate, sensitive (men are sensitive too). And sometime I'm very opinionated about things I feel strongly about. Don't let my age stagnate you, I can compete with an 18 year old in the athletic department. I'm healthy and in good shape. My outlook on life is having enough common sense to understand the world as it is, the good and the bad. I believe I can RIGHT some WRONGS in this not-so perfect world. I'm getting my act together from within. Real change starts with the "man in the mirror".

I am a struggling writer, meaning I've yet to obtain publishing status. I had a few essays highlighted in various magazines. I write about an array of different subjects. My life story is somebody else's story. My past failures can be a "wake up call" for the many youngsters posing as play gangsters.

I would also like to set the record straight. The HBO prison show called "OZ" is not even close to depicting life behind bars. Prison is much more civilized. Trust me, people are not going around committing mass murder and sexually assaulting each other. Though you have your few predators looking like humans. They indeed need to be in prison. The majority of men in prison spend their time writing, reading and elevating their education. We develop skills that can be of use once we are released back into the REAL WORLD. We all have one thing in common, loneliness and the intense need to feel needed and acknowledged. That feeling of knowing someone, somewhere cares.

I miss the presence of a woman. It is more than just a physical thing. I miss sitting next to a woman listening to her view points or just watching her be a woman. I simply miss the companionship that only a woman can give. If you decide to write back "I hereby promise" not to disappoint you. I'm so much more than a prison number.

Take care. . .
